I am a QuickBooks ProAdvisor and some of my clients use QuickBooks while others use some of the above or other accounting programs. The first two on the list can handle most small to medium sized businesses, specific industries, and not-for-profit organizations — right out of the box. Other companies specialize in payroll programs that we may recommend if you have complex payroll calculations and/or numerous employees.
You may have noticed that the name Sage keeps showing up in my list. There is a reason: the company has been buying up software vendors that were producing accounting programs for the Canadian market.
Of course, there are other companies not in the list that produce Canadian accounting software. But, whatever accounting program you purchase, make very sure that it can deal with Canadian tax reporting requirements.
U.S. accounting programs designed for U.S. markets may not be able to handle our Goods and Services Tax, nor our payrolls. So ensure that the accounting program you're about to buy can handle your Canadian accounting needs.
